Langley British Columbia: A great spot for a western vacation adventure!

by: Jim Kellie

A trip to British Columbia would not be complete without a visit to the famous Fraser Valley region. The Fraser Valley region is known for its great fishing, outdoor recreational facilities, beautiful parks and rich history. With so much to offer to native British Columbians and visitors alike, it might be difficult to arrange your travel schedule. Regardless, it can be guaranteed that you will not regret including Abbotsford and the City of Langley in your plans. Both travel destinations offer a host of entertainment opportunities for area visitors.

Resting in the Fraser Valley, just north of the Fraser River, Abbotsford is located a mere 65 kilometers east of Vancouver. Travel to Abbotsford presents no difficulty, as it is accessible by air, rail and land. The Trans-Canada Highway and Abbotsford Airport offer convenient routes into and out of the Abbotsford area. Located to the west of Abbotsford, the City of Langley and its district municipality join Abbotsford and several other communities to make up the local region known as Mighty Fraser Country. Like Abbotsford, the District Municipality and City of Langley also offer ease of access for visitors through the travel services of a local airport. Langley Municipal Airport is a thriving hub of activity that can provide the perfect bookends to your British Columbia visit. The city of Langley is located a short distance from the American border or a mere 45 minute drive from Vancouver.

Some activities that will enrich your visit to the Langley/Abbotsford area include boat tours, self-driving camping and road tours, guided backcountry tours and/or customized vacation tours complete with rentals. The golf enthusiast just might find the perfect golden golf experience on one of Abbotsford’s scenic golf courses. Anglers can enjoy a unique experience casting a line or two out over beautiful Mill Lake located in the very centre of Abbotsford proper. Downtown Abbotsford provides a complete experience with a variety of boutiques to browse through, symphony performances, festivals and summer park concerts to enjoy, all set against a background rich in history and culture. Choose from a broad selection of hotel, spa and fine dining establishments to cap off your daily adventures.

Fort Langley, established as a trading post in 1827 by the Hudson Bay Company, offers a glimpse into the years that marked the birth of the British Columbia we know today. If you are looking for a more modern cosmopolitan experience, the City of Langley is also home to the Cascades Casino where you can enjoy the slot machines or try your luck at a hand of Texas Hold ‘em in their poker room. The Coast Hotel and Convention Centre, contiguous to the casino, provides the latest in hotel and convention center amenities. Connoisseurs can enjoy an award-winning vintage, have a bite to eat or shop at the boutique at Langley’s Domaine de Chaberton Estate Winery. Nature lovers visiting the Mountain View Conservation Centre, just outside of Langley, will enjoy the view of local wildlife species and as well as more exotic offerings from around the world. Langley also presents a full range of hotel accommodations including the Super8 Langley (http://www.super8langley.com).

Whatever travel requirements you might have, Abbotsford and Langley will tender a world of excitement for the outdoor and indoor enthusiast alike.
